Background
Anyway (formerly Year13) is a platform dedicated to making career planning accessible for every Australian school student. Anyway’s mission is to transform a confusing counselling one-to-many process into a personalized, one-on-one journey, empowering students to make confident, data-backed decisions for their future.
Problem
Today, the system is at a breaking point: a single career counsellor is often responsible for over 500 students. This Guidance Gap in Australian schools has left young people feeling blind and overwhelmed during the transition from school to work.
Solution
To bridge this gap, we created Anyway powered by AI. And we named our guide Blinky—an AI guide that helps students chat about career options, explore career paths they’ve never considered, analyze real-world outcomes using virtual career experiences, and earn rewards for their progress.
My year-long iterative design approach delivered a high-fidelity ecosystem centered around the AI experience:
Expressive AI Identity: Designed Blinky’s interactive mascot and personality, including a distinct conversational tone of voice, animated "typing" states, and emotive feedback patterns to build user trust.
Gamified Career Discovery: Developed a suite of fun, expressive activities—including personality quizzes, reflective journals, and a recommendation engine—that transforms job searching into an engaging, guided journey.
Cross-Platform Adaptive UI: Built a fully responsive Desktop and Mobile interface that uses clear messaging and intentional interaction design to communicate complex career data simply.
Conversational Logic & Refinement: Optimized AI chat responses for readability and established a standardized component library to ensure a consistent look and feel across every chat bubble and button.
Engineering-Ready Design System: Created a Tailwind CSS-aligned design system that bridged the gap between design and code, reducing handoff friction and accelerating development time by 60%.
Note: Design presented in this case study may/can have undergone update since the time of writing the case study.
